ITALIAN AMBASSADORíS CHANDIGARH VISIT
The three day visit of Mr. Roberto Toscano, Italian Ambassador to Chandigarh lasted from 8 to 10 September 2009. He was accompanied by his wife Mrs. Toscano, Mr. Niccolo Tassoni, Head of Commercial Section of the Italian Embassy and Dr. Annis Gabriele Head of Consular and Political Section also looking after the visa operations of the Italian Embassy countrywide.
The Ambassador and his colleagues accompanied by Mr. Ranjit Malhotra, Honorary Consular Correspondent of the Italian Embassy for the State of Punjab and Chandigarh accompanied the Ambassador’s team to the Chief Minister of Punjab, Governor of Punjab and all official meetings and engagements within the region.
Mr. Ranjit Malhotra, stated that the visit was very fruitful. The interaction with Mr. Prakash Singh Badal, the Chief Minister of Punjab was very meaningful. In a high powered meeting at the residence of the Chief Minister, a large number of key civil servants from the agro based industries, animal husbandry and dairy technology departments had serious deliberations with the Ambassador and his colleagues, with a view to explore the potential areas of immediate cooperation between the State of Punjab and Italy.
During his meeting with the Chief Minister, the Hon’ble Ambassador was greatly appreciative of the hard working Punjabi community in agricultural operations in rural parts of Italy. He also told the Chief Minister of Punjab, that in the coming months, trade delegations from Italy also those dealing in agricultural machinery would be visiting Delhi and would look forward to bilateral trade between the State of Punjab and Italy.
That on the first day of the visit the Ambassador, his wife and his colleagues visited the residence of the Malhotras for dinner. His Excellency General (Retd.) Dr. S.F. Rodrigues, PVSM, VSM, the Governor of Punjab and Administrator, U.T. Chandigarh and Mrs. Jean Rodrigues were immensely pleased to interact with the Ambassador and his delegation at the dinner reception in their honour hosted at the residence of the Malhotras.
Delivering a lecture on international law to students of Army Institute of Law here on Wednesday, Hon’ble Ambassador Toscano said international laws and rules were needed to deal with problems related to environment, diseases and terrorism. Better international laws are required to tackle terrorism, said Roberto Toscano, Ambassador for Italy. Anil Malhotra, an eminent advocate, delivered a lecture on his recently released book, ‘NRIs and the Law.’ Malhotra highlighted the problems faced by NRIs in various nations. Institute Principal Dr. Anjana Kakar proposed the vote of thanks.
The Ambassador also had a breakfast meeting with Mr. R.I Singh, Chief Information Commissioner, State of Punjab.
The Italian Guests also visited the Phulkari showroom in Sector 17, Chandigarh, where best of the traditional hand made artifacts made in the State of Punjab are sold in the emporium run by the Punjab Government. They were accorded a warm welcome by Mr. S.S Rajput, the Managing Director of the Punjab State Industrial Export Corporation. They were amazed to see the variety of handicrafts available at Phulkari. This aspect becomes valuable in so far relating to the cultural exchange between the State of Punjab and Italy.
During the official meetings, and informal interaction within the city, the Ambassador received a large number of requests to open a language and a cultrual centre within Chandigarh. The Ambassador also stated, that he would make serious efforts to have an Italian film festival in Chandigarh in the near future.
Mr. Ranjit Malhotra, concluded that the official visit concluded on a very positive note, strengthening cultural, consular and economic cooperation between the State of Punjab and Italy.
